Synopsis
Penryn Young has found herself in the middle of an angel world domination. She, together with her disabled sister Paige and her not so right in the head, mother are surviving the best way they can, by running and hiding from the savages that lurk and feed on the dark. But an angel falling from the pitch black interrupts their escape to safety. Penryn and her family watch as the Angel is unfairly outnumbered and brought to his knees by five of his fellow kind. They then proceed to mercilessly slice off each of his wings, torturing his last bit of strength. It was a heart numbing sight that caused the slightest quiver to escape Paige's mouth, instantly alerting the Angels unnatural hearing. One of them immediately advanced on them and that's where chaos broke out. Penryn's mom split the second she saw the Angel coming, leaving Paige in her wheelchair behind. Penryn quickly thinks of a half baked plan to help the broken angel by throwing him his sword. The Angel, Raffe, being a warrior is up the second the sword hits his outstretched hand. He swipes and the Angels bleed and fly away scared and injured but not before one of them kidnaps Paige and it is up to Penryn and the help of her wingless angel to get her back and maybe try to stop the upcoming apocalypse.
Spoilery Stuff
This is probably the darkest horrific book I have ever read and I love it to death!
The story kicks into action with Penryn and her family running for their lives, and it's non stop from there. Raffe, the ungodly angel is Penryn's last hope of getting her sister back and he's also a huge pain in her butt. But his arrogance and meanness is soon subdued after Penryn risks her life multiple times to save his, but he never lets his pride slip.
The scene in the first house they camp out in, where Raffe holds and comforts Penryn while she was having a nightmare is beautiful and heart melting. I think I read that three times over! There were always the little things peppered here and there that Raffe would say or do, that would make Penryn think twice about his feelings toward her but that kiss...that unexpected kiss at the hotel club, wow! That was what we waited on our toes for, then he crushes our little hearts! Stomps on it with his big combat boots with just eight words "You should know...I don't even like you" My heart shattered into a thousand pieces for Penryn.
But the ending when he thought she was dead and he carried her, even though he could barely stand, up flights of stairs and through a lobby that was a war zone of fighting Angels and men, that uncovered the true Raffe, and I was singing high praises although this scene was painstakingly hard to read.
I won't lie there are some gruesome scenes, that are so descriptive, that it would make your lunch bubble up to your throat, but it is relevant to the story. And I am definitely not a person who likes blood and gore, but I handled it pretty well!
Now let's talk about Penryn's mother. She is hilariously demented and weird! Her character is one of those where you seek to find her hidden between the words, like searching for a freaky, scary but funny waldo. She never had any dialogue till the ending but her presence was known by rotting eggs and the way Penryn would say "My mother was here" or "My mother's been busy" or "How did she find me?"
I am in awe of Penryn. Such a strong character. I love her witty responses to whatever Raffe says and the fact that even though she's small, she could hold her own in a fight. I mean this girl is the definition of badass! From martial arts and jujitsu training just to name a few, this girl kicked some serious, big, hard man butt!! Her strength, bravery, and compassion outweigh all other protagonists I've read thus far. I admire and respect this girl to her core.
Raffe is an outerworld being. Unbelievably swoon worthy. The angel that's perched in your dreams, that you would commit the naughtiest of sins to be with. I love his charisma and pride and his never ending courage. His strength is always misjudged, I still don't know the capacity of it! His beauty is alien and cannot be compared to any human form. He is an Adonis, (to quote Penryn).
Raffe and Penryn form the team i would die to be a part of. Their unison is unbreakable and the banter they share is ridiculously entertaining!
I cannot finish this review without praising the author of this amazing book!
The apocolyptic world of San Fransisco designed in Susan Ee's brilliant mind is demolished on a massive scale. Every line, of every bridge or skyscraper was descriptively captivated and brought to the mind's eye without effort. Her writing is fantastic and structured so that every word forms sharp images, even the grotesque horrorific scenes left a bad taste in my mouth and a sickening feeling at the pit of my stomach.
I love this book. It is my favourite dystopian and I don't think that would change no matter how many books I read. 5/5(trillion
