white hot kiss review
Synopsis {Spoiler Free}
Layla, 17, is half Warden (Humans who shift into gargoyles and help protect the city against demons) and half Demon. Although being raised by the Wardens since age 9, she was seen as somewhat indifferent because of the demon blood that ran through her veins and the fact that she hungered for souls and could kill if she gives into the craving, is also a 'tad' of an indifference. But, given the opportunity to tag (put a demon on radar by touching it, making it easier for Wardens to find and send them back to hell) she thought she was helping and part of a team that was on the side of right and good. But on her usual route, cornered by a demon who was searching for her, she was surprisingly saved by an Upper Level Demon who will invade her life and turn her world upside down by opening doors full of secrets to her past and inevitable future.

Spoilery Stuff
I was sucked into this story from the first chapter. The intro of Layla, who she was and what she did was focused and irrelevance was subdued. But, I will not lie, Roth's character is the basis to why I love this book! His intro was badass from the start. I mean this guy is insanely cool for a hot Demon. He has a live snake tattoo (Bambi) that moves on his skin and comes off to form into a gigantic real live snake that eats (swallows whole) its owner's enemy! How freakin' awesome is that! I was engulfed by his sarcastic humor and witty comments; my brain was transfixed by the idea of him (sigh)
Ok, so let's move on to Zayne and the Wardens. Now, I don't want to hate on them, but they kept some serious crap from Layla, the truth about her mother being Lilith and father, Elijah, a man who hated her and wanted her dead. And I know they thought they were protecting her, but I seriously think they were afraid of her and the powers she could posses, knowing who her mother is, she could become something that could break the clan
Layla and Zayne's relationship I'm sorry to say was a bore fest. His character was vanilla for someone who fights demons. And she thinks she was in love with this guy?!
Layla held onto Zayne like a security blanket. Her love for him was desperate, always grabbing for attention and I honestly hated the girl she was around him, needy, coy and vulnerable. Layla still held on to the past, to their childhoid rituals like a little girl with a crush. She let jealousy overpower her when it came to Danika, and Zayne babied her and that was the difference between him and Roth.
Roth opened her eyes to the truth, to reality. He encouraged her strength and never restrained her. He saw her for who she really was and that was part demon and no matter how much she tried to cage that part of her, it shadowed her being. It waited inside, ready to bloom and Roth was the sun, the rain and the earth
Zayne was the only friend she knew since she was nine. The one person she trusted with her secrets, but things were changing, Zayne was changing becoming more distant and she and Roth became closer. She confided in him and he understood her better than anyone else. He became her friend, her pillar that brought out her strength, and eventually, her love
After finding out who she was and the fact that someone was trying to raise the first children of Lilith that may cause the apocalypse to fall on earth, Roth and Layla worked together to figure out who was trying to kill her and how to stop them from raising the army that will cause a war between heaven and hell on earth itself. The answer was in the Lesser Key and on their journey to finding the book, Layla's trust for Roth grew and her doubts surrounding him slowly began to vanish.
What really pissed me off though, is after figuring out and retrieving the book themselves, mostly because of Roth, the Wardens got hold of lesser key, something they were looking for themselves, yet they made Layla feel so guilty for socializing with a demon...a demon who could crack all their warden asses with one motion, a demon who was the son of the devil himself but in the end will save all their damned lives!
"I lost myself the moment I found you." This line tortured my heart!
Armentrout created one of the most beautifully, demonic characters in Asteroth. My heart buried itself in the pits of hell for this character, this guy, this demon. 4.5/5
